- The red coin collecting gimmick from Super Mario Bros: Coin Quest returns again, but this time, you are collecting shines instead. This gimmick makes a comeback again later on with the release of Super Mario Bros: Seeking Sunshine.
- In addition to the shine collecting levels, this game features lots of unique minigame levels as well.
- This game uses music from Sonic 2006.
- This is the last game to use version two of the Hello Mario Engine before it was finally scrapped.
